Invasion of the Space Invaders di Martin Amis

Scoprii la scrittura di Martin Amis per caso, acquistando un libro da un rivenditore dell'usato. Non sapevo chi fosse e nemmeno che la sua fama avesse raggiunto anche l'Italia. 

Si trattava del libro L'Informazione (Einaudi, Torino 1996); un racconto in prima persona di un aspirante scrittore che soffre il successo editoriale del migliore amico, autore di libri molto più commerciali e dozzinali dei suoi. Scrittura complessa, sarcastica e colma di allusioni colte.

Quando, quindi, seguii l'asta del libro di cui sopra, Invasion of the Space Invaders, (peraltro messo in vendita da un importante libraio antiquario operativo su ebay, souvenir_century) non mi resi immediatamente conto che si trattava dello stesso autore. Era un testo dedicato agli arcade games, "giochi da sala", distante anni luce dalla produzione raffinata di Amis. Con l'eccezione di una prefazione illustre: Steven Spielberg.

Il risultato dell'asta, però, portato dagli offerenti a più di 100 euro, faceva pensare a un autore importante...

Alla fine scoprii che si trattava di Amis e, grazie ad un recente articolo su Il Sole 24 Ore, venni a sapere che il libro fu da lui stesso rinnegato a successo ottenuto (da Emilio Cozzi, "E Martin Amis rinnegò il suo testo", Il Sole 24 Ore, 13 gennaio 2013). 

Mai più ristampato e assente nella sua recente biografia ad opera di Richard Bradford (Martin Amis. The biography, Pegasus Books, Berkeley 2012), il titolo è destinato all'oblio.

Ma rimane sempre una chicca per collezionisti...

I discovered Martin Amis by chance, when I bought one of his books in a re-sell market. I didn't know who he was neither that he was quite known in Italy.

The book was The information (Einaudi, Torino 1996), talking in first person about an aspiring writer who suffers for the successful career of his best friend, who publishes commercial and cheap books.

A very complex, sarcastic and full of cultured allusions writing.

So when I followed the auction of the book Invasion of the Space Invaders (by the way, sold by an important antiquarian librarian working on ebay, souvenir_century) I didn't realize immediatelly that it was from the same writer. It was a text about the arcade games, very far from the Amis's refined works. With the exception of an eminent prefaction: Steven Spielberg.
The result of the auction, however, (more than 100 euros) was telling me that we were talking about an important author...
Finally I found out that it was Amis and, thanks to a recent article in the Il Sole 24 Ore, I discovered that the book was repudiated by him after his success (da Emilio Cozzi, "E Martin Amis rinnegò il suo testo", Il Sole 24 Ore, 13 gennaio 2013).
Never reprinted and never mentioned in the recent Richard Bradford's biography (Martin Amis. The biography, Pegasus Books, Berkeley 2012) , the book is destined to disappear.
But it still remains a collector's obsession...
