Le prime di Cormac McCarthy / Cormac McCarthy's firsts

E' da un pò di tempo che osservo il mercato delle prime edizioni italiane di Cormac McCarthy, scrittore americano dalla fama ormai planetaria.

Molti sono i film tratti dai suoi libri, uno per tutti Questo non è un paese per vecchi dei fratelli Coen, considerato un capolavoro.

Il collezionismo delle sue prime italiane sembra essere silenzioso e timido, ma ad ogni modo esistente e assolutamente insospettabile. A segnalarmelo è stato un libraio antiquario di Roma, nonché mio lettore occasionale, che ha venduto una prima edizione di McCarthy addirittura a 50 euro!

Così mi sono incuriosita e ho iniziato a documentarmi.

Ne è uscito che ok, alcune prime edizioni sono poco comuni. Ma rimangono sempre testi stampati da una grossa casa editrice, quasi esclusivamente l'Einaudi, e per di più recentemente. Quindi le edizioni spuntano con discreta regolarità.

Una nota curiosa però c'è: lo scrittore americano fu "scoperto", come spessissimo accade (vedi Zafón, Ammaniti, Pennacchi, ecc. ecc. ecc.), da una piccola casa editrice napoletana, la Guida, che nel 1993 stampò Cavalli selvaggi con ammirevole anticipo.

Due anni dopo l'Einaudi decise di acquistarne i diritti e fare dei libri dell'autore dei bestsellers, con un numero altissimo di ristampe e riedizioni tascabili.

Ad ogni prima edizione, stampata nella bellissima collana Supercoralli in tela carta da zucchero - marchio distintivo dell'Einaudi - e sovraccoperta illustrata seguirono sistematicamente le edizioni tascabili in cartoncino bianco. Quindi l'interesse non è dato dall'irreperibilità dei testi.

In ordine cronologico uscirono: Oltre il confine (1995), Cavalli selvaggi e Meridiano di sangue (1996), Il buio fuori (1997) e Città della pianura (1999).

Ad oggi tutti e cinque i libri risultano se non introvabili, almeno difficilmente reperibili. Mentre l'edizione Guida di Cavalli selvaggi non sembra riscuotere grande interesse. 

Cosa curiosa, essendo la prima opera dell'autore ad apparire in Italia.

Since a while I'm following the market of Cormac McCarthy's first italian editions, the American worldwide known author. Many of his books has been turned in movies, like for example the Coen's Questo non è un paese per vecchi, considered one of his best books.
The collecting of his italian firsts seems silent and shy but it does exist and it's quite unsuspected. I discovered it by a librarian from Rome (an occasional reader of my blog too), who has sold a copy of a first McCarthy's edition for 50 euros!
So I became curious and I started to research the case, finding out that ok, his first editions are not common. But they still remain books printed by a huge publishing house, mainly Einaudi, and moreover quite recently. So these books  are coming out with a discreet regularity.
However there is one curious thing: this American writer has been discovered (as happens oftenly - look Zafón, Ammaniti, Pennacchi, etc. etc. etc.) by a small press from Naples called Guida. They printed Cavalli selvaggi in 1993 with an admirable advance.
Than, two years after, Einaudi decided to buy royalties and make his books bestsellers, with an enormous number of reprints and pocket editions. After each first edition, in the beautiful Supercoralli collection with the light blue cover (the Einaudi's distinctive mark) and illustrated dust jacket followed the pocket edition in white cover. So the interest in these editions is not given by their rarity.
In chronological order went out: Oltre il confine (1995), Cavalli selvaggi e Meridiano di sangue (1996), Il buio fuori (1997) and Città della pianura (1999).
Currently all five books are difficult to find and curiously the Guida edition of Cavalli selvaggi doesn't seem to be sought after, although we're talking about the first book that appear in Italy from this author.
