The Moviegoer by Walker Percy

Un altro libro molto citato da Basbanes nel libro di cui vi ho parlato nel post precedente (pp. 96-99) e un'opera pressoché sconosciuta in Italia, ma molto collezionata all'estero.

In Italia è uscito in due case editrici differenti, la prima  - più rara e ricercata, dalla stupenda copertina collage - è quella Mondadori 1989. In seguito intervenne la Marcos y Marcos con un'ultima ristampa nel 2010.

Il titolo ovviamente era intraducibile, pertanto si sono sforzati di rendere l'idea ugualmente, anche se l'effetto non è lo stesso.

Il romanzo, uscito in America nel 1961, narra di un dandy contemporaneo, avvezzo alle cose belle, nonostante cerchi costantemente una "redenzione morale" mai davvero raggiungibile.

Come ci rivela Basbanes di cui sopra, il libro uscì in un numero esiguo di copie, essendo stato il suo libro di esordio (si mormora 1500 copie soltanto) e l'anno successivo vinse il National Book Award, stracciando autori come Heller e Updike.

Oggi uno dei librai antiquari più prestigiosi d'America (vedi sopra), Bauman Rare Books, lo dà come venduto. E possiamo già immaginare il prezzo; una copia autografa al momento oscilla tra i 5000 e i 9000 euro.

This book was quoted several times by Basbanes in the book I talked about in my previous post (Among the Gently Mad, pp. 96-99). It is barely known in Italy, but it has intrigued many collectors abroad.

The Moviegoer was published in Italy by two separate publishers: the first edition – the more sought-after and rare of the two, with its wonderful collage front cover – is from 1989, by Mondadori, whereas the last reprint by the second publisher, Marcos y Marcos, is from 2010.

The title was obviously untranslatable into Italian, so they did their best to translate it anyway, even though the effect is not quite the same.

Published in the United States in 1961, the novel tells the story of a contemporary dandy who, though accustomed to beautiful things, is always after “moral redemption”, which he will never be able to attain.

As Basbanes revealed, being the author’s debut novel, the book was published in a small number of copies (reportedly only 1500). The following year, The Moviegoer earned its author the National Book Award, winning over important authors such as Heller and Updike.

Today, one of the most renowned rare book dealers of the United States, Bauman Rare Books, has sold it out. And we can all imagine what its price was: a signed copy is currently worth between €5.000 and €9.000.
