Vita da uomo di Salinger / Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye

About Il giovane Holden we all already heard, but about the book Vita da uomo, curated by Jacopo Darca, maybe not many of us know.
I'm referring to the first, unlucky, edition of the Salinger's masterpiece, which has become a classic of the american XX century literature. The novel will reach the success in Italy only after the second Einaudi's edition of 1961.
This kind of bildungsroman, called The Catcher in the Rye, which was published a year before the italian edition and which is the first work of the author, anticipates somehow the literary genre of the english "angry" guys, like Colin MacInnes with his Absolute Beginners. Actually a signed copy reaches 11.000 euros, often sold by the auction house Christie's in London.
The first italian edition it's not so expensive, but anyway the estimation is around 200-300 euros.
A justified price for a good novel.

Ciò che non ha limiti... / What doesn't have limits...

Long time I don't write about one of my favourite topics: the art of the Sixties.
Today, in particular, I want to talk about a very rare artist's book realized by one of the Arte Povera masters, Giulio Paolini, printed by himself in 50 numbered and signed copies.
I haven't been able to find an estimation, but it's enough to say that the antiquarian librarian based in Turin Giorgio Maffei is offering it for a price on request. Indicatively it may cost 600-1000 euros.
Ciò che non ha limiti... is made by a list of names and surnames of Paolini's friends, in alphabetical order, and it's an ante quem, in conceptual terms, of his famous work showed at the group exhibition Il Teatro delle Mostre of the same year (about which I've already wrote; look at the post)
The book is mentioned by Germano Celant – who invented the artist's book's notion – in his book Offmedia, 1977 (pp.107-73), where he revises his old article about the artist's book.
In the essay about Paolini's book, Celant talks about the concept of the name as a “insignificant sign (…) a personal and subjective term, which doesn't have any universal or linguistic characteristics. It's just an abstract characterization that comes together with the person.” (Offmedia, in G.Celant, Artmix. Flussi tra arte, architettura, cinema, design, moda, musica e televisione, Feltrinelli, Milano 2008, p.38).
A notion which recalls to Roland Barthes's semiotics theories, very famous in that times, which in Italy were divulgated by Umberto Eco.
For the semiotic, every sign that exists in the human civilization it has no sense by itself, but it obtains it when it enters in a cultural context. It also may obtain many different meanings in different contexts. So the sign is the expression of a certain culture and not a universally understandable element.
In Paolini's case, the cultural context that is able to understand the names is very restricted, because only his friends can recognize it. With this work, according to Celant, Paolini wanted to show the difference between an artist's book and a traditional book (for example a vocabulary or a scientifical text), which doesn't require any interpretation or action by its public.

Un'altra data fatidica - 1994 / Another fateful date - 1994

Who is following me since a while surely knows that I like to research chronological coincidences, obviously related to the world of books (look at the post1 and post2). To this end, the 1994 is a very full of events, not only for what regards publishing.
As everyone knows, in '94 Silvio Berlusconi was elected and, no matter if we think good or bad about him - and I don't want to express any personal opinions - , he began to guide our country to a radical change. In may of the same year was also elected Nelson Mandela; although I know that bringing together these two names seems quite inappropriate...
In '94 is also the year of Kurt Cobain's suicide, the leader of the Nirvana, that has shocked an entire generation of young guys who were idolizing him, and of the last Frank Sinatra's concert, organized near Tokyo.
For what concerns the world of the printed papers, happened a curious fact: four actually famous writers in Italy had their first book published. Massimo Gramellini and two other coauthors wrote their scandalous report about the Berlusconi's political circumstances, which provoked the censorship of the book and the consequent rarity of it.
About this fact we can read in the already mentioned Libri scomparsi nel nulla.... ed altri che scompariranno presto of Simone Berni (Simple, Milano 2006, p.32). To be honest, the book is currenlty selling on ebay for a low price and there are many copies available.
In the same year comes out the suffered - 33 rejections - debut book of Antonio Pennacchi, the spokeperson of the working class's conditions. Mammut will be reprinted in 2011 from Mondadori with a great success. Personally I've red it in this edition, cause I wasn't able to find it in the original version.
The same happened with the first book of the great roman writer Emanuele Trevi (about whom I've already wrote in the past), Istruzioni per l'uso del lupo. Since about a year I've started to look for this book, which at the end I've decided to buy in the latest edition by Elliott from 2012.
Istruzioni per l'uso del lupo is a very successful book, although the author have personally told me that he doesn't love it so much. It is clearly an essay by an emergent, so still immature and without a precise thinking line. Very far from his masterpiece, fnalist at the Premio Strega, Qualcosa di scritto.
I conclude citing again Ammaniti's Branchie!, without saying more cause I don't want to repeat myself. About the Ammaniti's success we already know every detail.

Harry Potter mania!

J.K.Rowling, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Bloomsbury, London 1997 (immagine tratta dal link)

La copertina delle edizioni successive  / The cover of later editions

My careful and multidirectional eye just couldn't miss the Harry Potter's mania and the passion for its first editions's collecting, which comes unavoidably after it.
The success of this extraordinary novel, which, I have to admit, I didn't read but of course I heard about, is the first of a numerous sequence of successes achieved by the fantasy literature. The placement lists are now monopolized by books like Christopher Paolini's Eragon or Twilight saga.
But the Rowling's book was the first and the most loved.
Its valuaions for what concerns the first world edition in english, reaches 3000 euros, altough there are many copies in circulation.
For what concerns Italy the situation is interesting and complicated. As says Mariagrazia Mazzitelli, the Salani's editorial director interviewed on the website Wuz (look at the link), the book was printed in the may 1998 in 20.000 copies, with the cover showing Harry Potter without sunglasses and with the author's name in extenso. Immediatelly after, the printing house received a complaint letter form the agent, who was requesting the modification of the cover in the actual version: sunglasses and a shorten name, maybe because they wanted to hide the author's sex and obtain with it a larger number of readers.
The success was immediate and in the october 1999 they had a reprinting request.
At the moment there is only one copy on sale of the first, very sought after, version offered on ebay for a very high price: 800 euros. However the market is invaded by late editions (2000, 2001, 2002), which are - surprisingly - selling very well (around 40 -50 euros). Maybe this is related to the fact that the edition actually on sale, the one from 2012, doesn't have a hard binding; a quality usually requested by the book lovers.

Codex Seraphinianus

To satisfy the request of one of my readers, I want to talk you about a book by Luigi Serafini, Codex Seraphinianus, printed in 4000 numbered and signed copies.
I discovered it in the Alberto Manguel's Una storia della lettura (Mondadori, Milano 1998), an Argentine-born writer extremely cultured and book lover, both in a content and physical way. His books often talks about other books, in a pleasant and confidential manner, with anecdotes taken from his personal life.
By the way, Manguel had a fortune to establish a personal relationship with the great Argentinian writer: Jorge Luis Borges, about whom he wrote in the book Con Borges (Adelphi, Milano 2005).

For the description of the book I choose the one by the Libreria Segni nel Tempo, which is currently selling it for 3000 euros: "a kind of an illuminated code, which explores in an absolutely personal and surrealist way the many fields of the knowledge and the experience of an imaginary world, unknown to us, but that it clearly reflects it. As explains Franco Maria Ricci in a communication to the reader in the leaflet enclosed to the Codex, the first volume of this encyclopedia is dedicated to sciences of the nature (botanic, zoology, teratology, chemistry, physics and mechanics), the second to sciences of the human being (anatomy, ethnology, anthropology, mythology, linguistics, cooking, fashion games and architecture)." In the consumistic and low culture mood of the 80s this work appears very precious.
Moreover, at the end, the extraordinary publisher Franco Maria Ricci brings us - as in a fil rouge - to the initial source: Jorge Luis Borges, who has directed the Ricci's book series La Biblioteca di Babele (which recalls the title of one of his books).
In the collection, besides the texts from classics authors like Stevenson, Melville, Kafka or Kipling, there are also some books by Borges, very sought after in the market of bookcollecting (for the complete list, look at the link). One of these is A/Z from 1985, usually on sale for 50 - 80 euros.

Scaffale dei ricercati / Shelf of the sought books

Everyone is talking about it, everyone is looking for it. How could I not include in our usual column?
