Branchie : contemporary culture network and publishing

All'interno poche pagine di una maniacale cura e grafica all'avanguardia.

"BRANCHIE is a medium, filter, tale, comunication.
It's a project born in 2010 in Venice to comunicate the indipendent italian cultural realities.
BRANCHIE is an everyday information blog, an online archive, constantly growing in terms of expositive spaces, and a limited edition magazine and fanzine editor." (continues at the link)

I discovered Branchie on Artribune, thanks to an article that was introducing the new ArtVerona edition; among the stands of the many art galleries, it would be dedicated a section to the independent editors.
I just could not miss the visit to Verona!
So I've met the girls from Branchie: young, enterprising, very modest and polite. And when I told them I've already  bought one of their products, they were so happy.
The book Lago is a "soundtrack through images", created on the occasion of the 8th edition of the Lago Film Festival, an extraordinary event directed by a very enthusiastic young group of people. Inside the book, a little number of pages made with a maniacal care and avant-garde design.
If you are interested, it is still possible to buy a copy from their website, with a Paypal paying method.
Let's try to support this small but big miracles of the publishing!

In the complex and static italian art system many talents decide to go abroad: an example is given by the american managing of two geniuses like Cattelan and Stingel.
Another talent, although emerging, is Gabriele Bonato. A Fiumicello born artist, who had relations with many prestigious institutions and has been repeatedly honoured, but who has decided to move to Spain.
The Gabriele's artistic background, which I've fortunately followed since the beginning, has always been marked by a "good painting". And by a careful eye for the past, for the great masters (look a recent interview). His talent has made the rest.
A very qualitative art, which has the ability of transforming itself and renewing constantly, guided by a very good hand and by a great passion.
With this post I wish the best to this fantastic artist!

Il "freestyle" di Mark Gonzales

Mark Gonzales, Mort aux Matons, s.d., s.l.

My obsession for numbered editions is well known to my family... indeed for Christmas I received from my brother this amazing artist's book limited to 15 copies, made by the famous American skateboarder Mark Gonzales, actually on sale at Colette (if there are any copies still available).
The book has been realized by the artist when he was in Paris and it is made by the same poem repeated through the pages, with an image on the center.
Gonzales began his career decorating the bottoms of skateboards, then he started to compose poems and create works of art. Now he has become very renowned also in the art world.
Then again, Colette is confirming its capacity to constantly suggest new things!

Referring to an old post about the Einaudi's edition of the Robbe-Grillet's Il Voyeur, quite rare and sought, I want to inform that it is actually on sale in the latest Arion library's catalogue (Christmas '12) located in Montecitorio (Rome), in the antiquarian section (the catalogue is available at the link).
The copy has its illustrated dust jacket and a dedication with the author's signature, as all the other books from the XIX cent. library's section, coming from the library of the Associazione Culturale Italia in Turin. It is a non-profit A.C.I.'s initiative.
In the catalogue you can find many other rarities, like the Mario Praz's La Filosofia dell'arredamento, inscribed by the author too, or the first italian edition - rare if inscribed - of the Gore Vidal's Washington D.C. (Rizzoli, 1968).

The Hirschhorn's "battle" / La "battaglia" di Hirschhorn

Thomas Hirschhorn, Crystal of Resistance, Swiss Pavilion, Biennale di Venezia 2011

I can't wait to see the Venice Biennale. It is one of the events I simply adore and every time it's a surprise, but also a certainty. No matter what they say, it remains the most important italian, and not only, artistic event.
From the past edition I remember knowing Thomas Hirschhorn's art, which I completely ignored. In the Swiss Pavilion he created an involving aluminum and scotch made cave, which was including the symbols of the contemporary times, from the mobile phones, to his usual mutilated women's mannequins and images from the war's tragedies.
I was amazed especially by the meticulousness of the operation, which took months of work and which, I've found out, is his distinctive mark. Hirschhorn always creates autre worlds, emotionally strong and always committed.
An as much famous example, proved by this amazing catalogue called Bataille Maschine, is the Bataille Monument installation from 2002, realized on the occasion of the renowned german Documenta 11 group exhibition, usually organized every five years in Kassel.
As the title says, the work was dedicated to the surrealist french writer Georges Bataille and it was built outside the Documenta's pavilion. In the catalogue Hirschhorn choosed to explain every single phase of the creation, which was including a TV studio, a video and book library with books on Philosophy (related to Bataille's work topics) and with an exhibition dedicated to the writer.
But the most extraordinary aspect was his decision to choose turkish immigrants, who were living in the neighbourhood, - payed 8 euros an hour - to help him.
So the work becomes an opportunity to think about the social problems, working concretely and breaking the rules and conventions.
Going back to the catalogue I've showed, I bought it on the german ebay for a few dozen of euros. With a little bit of patience it is possible to find it for less than the actual estimation, which goes from 70 to 100 euros.
